Jennie Bond says the Duke of Sussex should be able to raise his concerns privately with his father
Prince Harry should be able to discuss his family’s security concerns with King Charles in private, according to royal commentator Jennie Bond.
The Duke of Sussex has moved back to the UK with Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, but has not been granted taxpayer-funded security.
Speaking to the Mirror, Bond said Harry’s time in Britain without publicly funded protection could affect perceptions of his case.
“I suppose the problem is that the longer he and his family stay here with no taxpayer-funded security, the weaker his case may seem. And the public will take note of that.
“However, things could change in an instant if Harry or his family were targeted. And there’s no denying that his risk level — given his high profile and military background — must be significant.”
Bond questioned why Harry could not pay for protection himself if he could afford his family’s luxurious lifestyle. However, she also expressed support for some public funding and suggested a possible compromise.
“I personally believe he does deserve a moderate level of taxpayer-funded security,” she said.
“I also think there must be some way in which either he or the King could contribute to the public purse in place of some of the taxes which might go towards Harry’s security. It surely can’t be rocket science?”
Bond added that Harry was “entitled” to raise the issue with his father privately, saying “hopefully he will soon get some answers”.
In the meantime, she advised Harry and Meghan to keep a low profile.
