King Charles did not avoid uncomfortable topics, from slavery reparations to his frustration during a storm.
King Charles may have lost his temper when heavy rain disrupted his welcome in Antigua last week, but he later showed he could see the funny side.
The King and his wife, Queen Camilla, ended their nine-day Caribbean tour with a banquet for Commonwealth leaders in Antigua.
During an emotional speech, Charles appeared to refer to the umbrella incident, now being called “rain-gate”.
Speaking to the Commonwealth leaders, he said his role was to be an “umbrella for you all”.
Addressing the 84 dignitaries, Charles, who heads the Commonwealth, described it as a “family of nations” and one of the “world’s more improbable organisations”.
“It is one of the few organisations able to unite countries famous for snow, countries famous for deserts, and, most of all – countries whose citizens are utterly convinced they enjoy perfect weather all year round,” he said.
“Although perhaps part of my role as head of the Commonwealth is to provide an umbrella for you all!”
The joke drew laughter across the hall, followed by applause.
The King seemed pleased with his joke and happy to laugh at himself.
