The move brings mixed emotions as Doria celebrates her 70th birthday in the US
Meghan Markle is looking forward to a new beginning in Britain, but leaving her mother, Doria Ragland, behind in Montecito has made the move bittersweet.
Prince Harry has previously highlighted Doria’s important role in their lives, particularly those of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. However, the Sussexes were absent when she celebrated her 70th birthday on Wednesday.
Before departing for the UK, Meghan reportedly promised to ensure her mother would not feel alone. Doria is understood to be staying at the family’s Montecito mansion.
“Meghan plans to see her mom regularly,” a source told People magazine. “They’re incredibly close.”
A source previously told the publication that the family wanted to spend time with those closest to them before leaving. Their departure “wasn’t a goodbye forever”, but more of a “see you later”.
Although the family anticipate a period of adjustment, Meghan remains fond of their California home and the life they have built there.
“Meghan really loves their life in Montecito and their home there. They know it’s going to take a little bit of time for everyone to settle in and adjust,” the source added.
Alongside those mixed emotions, Harry and Meghan are looking forward to what lies ahead for their children.
“There’s excitement about what’s ahead too, especially for the kids. They’re really happy for them and for everything they’ll get to experience.”
