King Charles is reportedly taking a risk to help Prince Harry smooth over his return to British life, as the Duke of Sussex’s long-running security dispute appears to move forward.
Harry had previously said he would not bring Meghan Markle or their children back to the UK after losing his security appeal in May 2025. In a BBC interview at the time, he spoke of wanting reconciliation with his family but maintained that police protection was essential before he could return with his wife and children.
A year later, the Sussex family arrived in Britain and met with the King and Queen Camilla. Around six weeks afterwards, reports emerged that Harry and Meghan were planning a move back to the UK, while the final outcome of the security arrangements remains pending.
Royal commentators believe the developments are unlikely to be a coincidence. RAVEC, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, has now completed its long-awaited risk-management board review.
Writing in The Royalist, Tom Sykes said it was “absurd” to assume King Charles had no involvement in the matter. He suggested that efforts to secure state-funded protection for Harry during visits to England may already be well underway, despite the likelihood of public opposition.
“Harry is being folded back into British life by his father,” Sykes claimed.
Sources close to Harry have long argued that the King could help secure protection for his son if he chose to do so. The latest developments have now fuelled speculation that Charles may have stepped in behind the scenes.
However, Sykes warned that the monarch could face consequences if he is seen to have intervened in a matter previously decided by the courts. Harry reportedly sought a review after making a private request to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
Sykes said the King’s office should issue a transparent statement if Charles has played a role, cautioning that defying public sentiment would be “a very unwise move for a monarch.”
The royal security dispute, it seems, is far from over.
