King Charles may be bracing for another difficult chapter in his family’s history as Charles Spencer prepares to revisit Princess Diana’s final years in a new memoir.
The Earl Spencer’s upcoming book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, is due for release next month, nearly three decades after the Princess of Wales died in the Paris car crash. The memoir is expected to revisit deeply painful moments from Diana’s life, including the turbulent breakdown of her marriage to the then-Prince Charles.
Diana’s relationship with the royal family was famously strained following the couple’s separation and divorce, while her brother also had his own tensions with the Firm. Now, sources speaking to Woman’s Day claim the Palace is concerned that the book could reopen old wounds.
“The King is indeed bracing for the worst in regard to Earl Spencer’s book,” a source told the outlet.
They pointed to the emotional disagreement surrounding Diana’s funeral, including the decision for Prince William and Prince Harry to walk behind their mother’s coffin. Charles Spencer reportedly viewed the idea as a “barbarity,” while the royal family faced the painful task of deciding how the young princes should take part in the service.
According to the source, the memoir will be Charles Spencer’s personal and unfiltered account, leaving the Palace with little control over how those events are portrayed.
“For a King who values careful messaging, an emotionally charged memoir from his late wife’s brother puts him in an unpredictable situation,” the insider added.
The reported concern comes as speculation continues over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK, with rumours suggesting their stay may have been quietly supported by Charles Spencer.
