Prince Harry’s planned documentary tribute to his late mother reportedly sparks tension with his brother
Princess Catherine and Meghan Markle have been drawn into renewed comparisons over Princess Diana’s legacy, as Prince Harry’s reported documentary plans risk complicating hopes of a reconciliation.
The Duke of Sussex is reportedly planning a special documentary honouring his late mother, with his wife, Meghan, expected to be involved. The Daily Mail’s senior editor-at-large, Richard Kay, previously revealed that Harry had been reaching out to friends and others who knew Diana, asking them to contribute.
A royal insider told Woman’s Day that Prince William is “horrified” by the prospect, particularly the comparisons between Meghan and Diana. According to the source, William believes Catherine is the person best suited to carrying on his mother’s legacy.
“From Harry’s perspective, it makes perfect sense to have Meghan heavily involved in this project. She’s his producing partner, and she brings a ton of expertise to the table,” the insider said, noting that Meghan reminds Harry of Diana.
The source claimed the Sussexes have been “collecting footage with the full support of the Spencers”, Diana’s family. They suggested that little stands in the project’s way apart from William’s reported objections.
According to the insider, William “can’t stand the narrative that Meghan is somehow this Diana 2.0”. The source further claimed that he sees Harry and Meghan as “hijacking this tribute to his late mother”, with its reported UK setting adding to his frustration.
The insider said William instead sees Catherine’s quieter dedication to Diana’s memory as a closer reflection of his mother.
“[William] says if anyone is like Diana, it’s Kate, who is just as devoted to her memory but in a much less showy way, which to William only proves his point, since Diana was never interested in the spotlight.”
